The Effects of Private School

            I went to a private school all the way up until I got to high school. Private Catholic school has, in my opinion, hardly any positives and many negatives. Boys’ hair had to be above a certain length, your socks had to be above your ankles, no nail polish, no makeup, and we were forced to wear hideous uniforms with sweaters-even in sweltering summer heat. We were also forced to go to Church every week and take religion classes. Also, we had the same six teachers every year in junior high. My graduating class in middle school consisted of 70-some kids; the entire school was made up of about 600. In junior high, everyone knew who everyone was, who their siblings were, and what kind of car their parents drove. The junior high contained one hallway and six classrooms.

            Coming into high school was such a culture shock for me. I went from wearing the same uniform as everyone else every day, to wearing almost whatever I wanted. One could dye their hair whatever color they pleased, and the boys can wear their hair as long as they’d like. Makeup is worn by almost every girl in the school, and even by some of the boys; the same is true with nail polish.

            High school changed my perspective of the world because it made me realize that the world is mine for the taking; I just have to go get it. High school made me realize this because there are so many choices I can make: classes, friends, whether or not to do homework, and how I’m going to spend my time.
